A letter from Adonis

Dear Sir/Madam,

Art is my life and creating is like breathing for me. It is a meditative process that grants me the pleasure to live happily. When engulfed within the process of painting, I allow the energy which rises from within to guide my mind and senses towards the completion of the piece. My inspirations stem from all walks of life; from a friendly conversation; a guitar tune; a butterfly flapping its wings; a destructive event. Specifically, travelling to and experiencing various places, cultures, and people around the world, expand my mind, contribute to my creativity and help me mature as an artist. Though I always look forward to reaching the finishing line, I take great pleasure in experiencing the journey; more so than the actual, final result.

I experiment with various surfaces and techniques including paint on canvas, wood, and paper using acrylic paints, oil pastels, charcoal, and pencil, depending on the feeling I want to portray. I enjoy acrylic paints as they give me the opportunity to work the painting in a repetitive manner, applying different layers of color onto the already dry, previously applied layers until a satisfactory result has been reached. Sometimes the application is a thin wash; other times it is quite thick. A thin wash allows me to give the piece a free flowing, lighter feeling; whereas applications of thicker colors create feelings of solidity.

At the moment I am creating an exhibition around a fictional “Cityscape” theme. My inspiration for it originated in the landscape of Maui. The positive feeling of the green landscape and the energy I felt while in Maui allowed me to connect seemingly opposite subjects. Depending on the cityscape view I want to portray, I set up points of perspective within a flat surface and draw lines from these points which intersect. At first, the cityscape looks very plain, but by application of color on each side of a building or cityscape area, a process during which I use masking tape, the painting is born. The cityscapes become alive through color. Application and balance of color within a specific size area is what interests me the most since, when it comes to my work, the energy of color is what gives my paintings its breath of life, its livelihood.

I am attaching a CD with selected paintings showing my various techniques as well as the paintings that I have created so far for the “Cityscape” exhibition. I am looking forward to talking to you about my work and answering any questions you might have.
