According to data from the Statistical Service of the Ministry of
Finance, the total population of Cyprus is estimated to be 818.400 of
whom 79,10% (647.354) is considered to be members of the Greek
Cypriot community that speak Greek, 10,70% (87.569)
belong to the Turkish Cypriot community that speak Turkish and 10,20%
(83.477) are other EU citizens residing in Cyprus, foreign workers
and expatriates.
English is widely spoken all over Cyprus. Other European languages,
including French, German and Russian are also spoken. While the majority of the Greek Cypriot community
are members of the Autocephalous Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church of
Cyprus, around 1% are members of the Armenian, Maronite and Latin
churches. Under the provisions of the 1960 Constitution of the
Republic of Cyprus, these
religious minorities chose to be considered members of the Greek
Cypriot community.
Since the Turkish invasion of 1974 and the occupation by the Turkish
army of over the one third of the
total area of the Republic, the demographic character of Cyprus has been changed dramatically, as a
result of Turkey’s population policies. There are now around 115.000
illegal Turkish settlers in the occupied area of the Republic of
Cyprus, while an estimated
of
55.000 Turkish Cypriots have emigrated to other countries. |
